Our Mission & Values

Leading the industry worldwide, BMDS provides advanced state-of-the-art products for the safest, most accurate identification of laboratory animals available today. As a company, our reason for being – our core competency and our passion – is applying cutting edge technology to create fully integrated systems designed to automate gathering, recording and validating research data for researchers and facilities.

BMDS History

Since 1986, BMDS has provided the vision and has created and developed the technology to expand our capabilities. Today, our products and accessories automate data and simplify animal lab research procedures for researchers in major pharmaceutical companies, government agencies, universities, and research facilities around the world. In the final analysis, there is no better testimony than the praise of satisfied customers.

Some fundamental requirements of animal laboratory research never change. Among the most basic prerequisites: You must be able to identify every animal. Without exception. Period.

At the 1987 Society of Toxicology Annual Meeting, BMDS introduced the first Electronic Lab Animal Monitoring System (ELAMS), instantly revolutionizing laboratory science, and making less humane methods of animal identification—such as toe clipping, ear notching, and tattooing—obsolete.

Today, our new digital series 8000 products are once again transforming the lab. These advanced digital DAS (Data Acquisition System) reader-scanner-programmers are available in models designed for varying counter-top, cart-mounted, or handheld applications. Ergonomic form factors, easy-reading display panels, and extensive connectivity options (facilitating work with peripheral devices) characterize the entire line.

Curt Miller

Director, R&D

Now extending to thirty-four plus years of experience in the Research and Development of precision products, Mr. Miller joined Bio Medic Data Systems formally in 2004 and was initially tasked with establishing the (then new) CNC machine shop to produce custom prototypes of new products for R&D.  Quickly integrating with our engineering team, Mr. Miller soon played a vital role in the design and manufacture of production equipment for BMDS, as well as providing on-site services to customer laboratories and facilities.

Designer and Master Machinist, Mr. Miller’s uniquely qualified skillset is derived from vast experience, which includes the design, production, and maintenance of injection mold tooling, as well as precision metal and plastic fabrication tooling and production dies.  With his acceptance of a position with Maryland Plastics as an injection mold technician and machinist in 1979, Mr. Miller began what has developed into a thirty-plus year career with BMDS parent, Bio Medic Corporation, and its related divisions.  Moving to Metal Systems in 1981, he added metal stamping, forming, and die making skills to his professional toolbox, and in 1986, upon returning to Maryland Plastics, Mr. Miller joined Manufacturing Engineering, participating and leading many sophisticated and demanding projects for the various divisions.  In 1998, he was promoted to Manager of Manufacturing Engineering.

As Director, R&D, Mr. Miller is tasked with leading the design team in the creation of new products and systems, as well as directing the manufacture of complex prototypes using advanced CNC equipment in the R&D Modeling Center at BMDS.  Responsible for designing and implementing automation systems with robotic cells, Mr. Miller supports all phases of manufacture, with a special emphasis on custom-built assembly equipment for secondary operations.  Additionally, he supports made-to-order solutions to meet client requirements, including fabrication and installation at customer’s facilities.
